Description
Izumo Oyashiro, known as the “God of Marriage,” and renowned for the “Myth of the White Hare of Inaba,” enshrines Okuninushi no Okami, the deity who played a pivotal role in Japanese mythology. Okuninushi, revered as the god of nation-building, traversed numerous challenges to pioneer the development of the land. He is also famed for the myth of relinquishing the land to Amaterasu Omikami, the Sun Goddess. The origin of Izumo Oyashiro dates back to this myth, as it was constructed as compensation for this transfer of land. At the end of Shinmon Street, lined with various shops, lies Seidamari, marking the entrance to the grounds of Izumo Oyashiro. From the torii gate at Seidamari, visitors follow the approach road to reach the hall of worship and the main shrine. Within the expansive grounds, besides the hall of worship and the main shrine, one can find numerous other shrines and facilities unique to Izumo Oyashiro. During this tour, participants will explore shrines and facilities outside the main grounds of Izumo Oyashiro associated with its rich mythology. Led by knowledgeable storytellers well-versed in the tales, visitors will delve into the mythical sites, including those related to the handing over of the kingdom. This tour promises to unveil the hidden secrets of Izumo Oyashiro, offering insights beyond the usual visitor experience.Izumo Oyashiro Gohonden (The main shrine ) Image provided by: Shimane Prefecture Tourism Federation.
