Description

In this workshop, you’ll craft a Shimenawa rope with the guidance of skilled craftsmen. Starting with a brief introduction about Shimenawa’s significance in Shinto and Japanese culture, you will select decorations and colors to personalize your rope. Then, step by step, you’ll learn the traditional techniques of binding and shaping rice straw into a sacred rope.

This hands-on experience concludes with a casual chat, where you can ask questions about the craft and the local culture.

1 Introduction to the Shimenawa Hall, its importance to the region, and why Shimenawa (sacred ropes) are made here.
2 Select decorations and colors, including Omamori (amulets), to personalize your rope.
3 Step-by-step crafting of your Shimenawa with expert guidance.
4 Casual chat with the craftsman and Q&A session.
