Description
This small-group, private journey follows the path from Izumo Grand Shrine to the Adachi Museum of Art, exploring Yasugi, Unnan, and Okuizumo through everyday life shaped by a thousand years of traditional ironmaking. With a local guide, you experience how mythology, iron culture, forests, water, and agriculture form one interconnected landscape.
Beginning at Izumo Grand Shrine, the journey continues through the historic town of Yoshida and into the Sugaya Tatara Ironmaking Settlement, a rare site where iron production once coexisted with forests and daily life. You stay at Kurayado Uzumaki, a countryside inn surrounded by terraced fields, where walking the village, heating bathwater with firewood, and sharing meals become part of the experience.
Over the following days, you walk through World Agricultural Heritage rice terraces, make soba by hand, cook over a traditional hearth, and take part in a hands-on mini tatara experience using iron sand. The journey concludes at the Adachi Museum of Art, where human insight and nature meet in balance, allowing the impressions of the trip to settle through art and landscape.
Physical Requirements
This tour includes some walking on gentle slopes and uneven paths, especially around terraced rice fields. It is suitable for guests who are comfortable with light walking and standing, but it does not involve long-distance hiking.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes. As activities take place outdoors, temperatures may feel hot or cold depending on the season. We recommend comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and layering, and that can get slightly dirty.
