World Agricultural Heritage Journey: Immersed in the Cycles of Iron, Food, and Everyday Life

In Okuizumo, a rural landscape recognized as a World Agricultural Heritage site, terraced fields and forests spread across a quietly powerful countryside. Extending through nearby Unnan and Yasugi, this region has been shaped for over a thousand years by traditional ironmaking. Iron production nurtured forests, managed water, and sustained terraced farming and food culture, creating a circular way of life that continues today. This private journey begins at Izumo Grand Shrine, then moves deep into the everyday landscapes of Unnan and Okuizumo, before concluding at the Adachi Museum of Art. Along the way, you experience local practices such as hand-making soba and cooking over a traditional hearth, while a local guide carefully traces the original landscapes shaped by iron, land, and daily life.
